We had a lovely visit to the Ryedale Folk Museum this summer in Hutton Le Hole, North Yorkshire. If you are visiting or in the local area on a nice weather day we highly recommend visiting Hutton Le Hole for not only the museum but also the beautiful stream that you can paddle in.

Hutton-Le-Hole is a small village situated in the picturesque district of Ryedale within the North York Moors National Park. It is famous for its free-roaming sheep however these move into the hills in the summer so there were no sheep to be seen when we visited. The village had a bad reputation in Victorian times but today it is considered as one of the most beautiful villages in the UK.

There is a public pay and display car park at the north end of the village. The pub in the village also has a pay and display car park that non-patrons can use. This was actually slightly cheaper than the public car park.

As well as the pub and the museum with its 20+ rescued and reconstructed historic buildings there are also a couple of tea rooms and two places you can purchase ice-creams.

The stream Hutton Beck winds its way through the middle of the village. It is crisscrossed by footpaths and wooden bridges. There are some pretty houses along the top edge of the beck. If you walk straight ahead from the tea rooms you will come to the better section of the beck for paddling in with a bank perfect for sitting on.

This is a beautiful spot for a picnic and to spend a few hours relaxing and playing in the water. If you do visit for a paddle we can recommend taking beach/rockpool shoes. The water is very shallow in places and some of the exposed rocks can be very slippy. Make sure your kids take it easy and don’t run about. There are also a few deep sections so take care with little ones.

My son loved paddling here and he made many walking trips up and down the section of stream in the photos. As the water isn’t too deep it’s also not too cold on a hot summer’s day. It also wasn’t as busy as I was expecting it to be, which was nice.
