The need for something that little bit different or something that gives you an adrenalin boost is becoming more and more popular, especially for families. We have compiled a list of 30+ of the best adventure days out that you can enjoy with the family in Yorkshire. Some have age limits, some have height limits, some are for everyone.

Some of these attractions may be seasonal. Please check ahead for opening hours and days. Many of these attractions also require you to prebook. Prebooking online in advance may also be cheaper.

Adventure Now Sheffield – South Yorkshire

A Bit About – Adventure Now offers a range of thrilling outdoor activities. They are located at Kenwood Hall Hotel in the centre of Sheffield with free parking. They offer archery, throwing angels, axe throwing, crossbows, catchphrase quests and bushcraft.

Prices – Prices vary according to the activity. Archery or Throwing angels £25 for kids, £30 for adults 1 hour. Catchphrase quest £10 per person, under 5s are free. Bushcraft £35 per person.

Who Can take part? – Archery – 7 years old. Axe throwing – 10 years old. Throwing Angels – 8 years old. Crossbows – 12 years old. Catchphrase quest – no minimum age. Bushcraft – 8 years old.

Agility York – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – Agility on the outskirts of York has two Ninja courses. One for kids aged 5-16 and one for older kids from the age of 12 can try. Both have a range of Ninja-type obstacles. They also have toddler sessions that run in off-peak times. There is even a wall you can try and run up plus a fun slide. Grip socks are necessary. Some obstacles aren’t suitable for younger people.

Prices – Peak child sessions cost £10.95 per person, spectators are free.

Who Can take part – Suitable from the age of 5. With special toddler sessions off-peak.

Another World Adventure Centre – West Yorkshire

A Bit About – This is an outdoor activity centre located near Halifax. They run 6 different pre-bookable packages where you can try out different activities.

Activities on offer include slingshots with paintballs, safe/normal target archery and safe woodland archery. Plus grass sledging and dirt scooters. There is a new toboggan track you can try, a low ropes course plus go-kart building and racing.

Prices – A package per family for 2 hours starts from £32, there are other packages priced around £45-65 and there is one over £100.

Who Can take part? – Minimum ages for their activities range from 7-10 years old. Although they do have packages that start from the age of 4.

Brimham Rocks – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – Brimham Rocks is a wonderful collection of natural rock formations high on a hill in Nidderdale. The rocks were formed millions of years ago and are now maintained by the National Trust. You can walk around the site and climb on as many rocks as you fancy. Make sure you pick up a map and look out for some of their named formations.

Prices – It is free to visit. There is a charge to park for non-members.

Who Can take part? – This is a day out for everyone. There is a main accessible path if you have a pushchair and even the smallest people can explore the rocks (with help).

Falling Foss Waterfall – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – The Falling Foss Waterfall is located a short drive from Whitby. The waterfall is 30 feet and although you can see it from a small viewing area above you can also attempt to get down to the base of the waterfall.

If you click the link above it will take you to a dedicated and detailed post about finding your way to the base of the waterfall. We didn’t take the steep bank down. Instead, we took the longer but less steep walk down through the woodland. You still have to cross the stream a couple of times and the path is tough going. I completed this with a then 7-year-old. There is a fabulous tea garden above the falls.

Prices – FREE. The waterfalls are free to visit, there may be a small charge to park depending on where you park.

Who Can take part? – I recommend you don’t try the walk down with children younger than 6 or 7 years old.

Go Ape – Dalby Forest and Temple Newsam – North and West Yorkshire

A Bit About – Go Ape has two locations in Yorkshire. Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire and Temple Newsam near Leeds in West Yorkshire.

Dalby Forest is home to a Treetop Challenge that takes around 2-3 hours to navigate. There are a number of challenges 35-metres high in the trees. There is a Treetop Adventure which is closer to the ground (although still high) with easier challenges for younger children. Sessions last for an hour. You can also enjoy Forest Segways in a one-hour session.

Temple Newsam’s Treetop Challenge is around 17 metres off the ground. There is a 13-metre high zip wire and the course takes around 2-3 hours. The Treetop Adventure course is designed for younger family members. With a range of obstacles over a 1-hour session.

Prices – Dalby Forest – Treetop Challenge £33 per person. Treetop Adventure £20 per person. Segways £40 per person.

Who Can take part – Dalby Forest – Main course children must be 10 years old and 1.4 metres high. For the younger course, there is a minimum height of 1 metre. Segways all participants must be at least 45kg/7st in weight.

Temple Newsam – The main course there is no minimum age but participants must be 1.4m in height. The younger course has a minimum height of 1m.

Hayburn Wyke Waterfall – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – Hayburn Wyke Waterfall is in a beautiful setting on a beach near Scarborough. There is all the info you need on finding the waterfall in the post linked above. Hayburn Wyke is a natural cove and part of a National Trust nature reserve. There is a lovely woodland walk from the car park down to the beach. It is relatively steep but not too taxing compared to some of the beaches on this coastline.

The beach has no sand and there are a great number of pebbles and large rocks but it is still really pretty. There are rock pools but it’s not easy getting to them. We sat by the waterfall for a while which is deeper in places than it looks.

Prices – FREE. It is free to visit. There is a small charge to park.

Who Can take part? – Children from the age of around 5 should be fine walking down and back up again. The path is not accessible for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

How Stean Gorge – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – The Gorge is a spectacular limestone ravine that has been carved out by thousands of years of flowing water. It is now an outdoor pursuits centre with adventurous family-friendly activities.

You can walk on trails on the upper pathway. These can be slippy and uneven but are suitable for the more timid adventurer. You can borrow a hard hat and visit the cave. Other activities include canoeing where no previous experience is necessary. There is also gorge walking, canyoning, caving, Via Ferrata and abseiling for the more adventurous visitors.

Prices – A ticket to walk the gorge and look in the cave costs £7 for an adult £5 for a child. The more adventurous activities are priced from £45 per person.

Who Can take part? – The trail and cave are for more confident walkers, perhaps from the age of 5 and over. Via Ferrata course is for those over 143cm. The more adventurous activities also have height limits.

Ingleton Waterfalls Trail – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail is a walk that follows a well-defined path. This runs close to the edge of two rivers where you can enjoy spectacular views of the waterfalls. Walking boots are strongly recommended and the trail is not accessible for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

The route is a 4.3-mile circular walk that takes around 2 to 4 hours. One of the highlights is Thornton Force which is regarded as one of the highest waterfalls in Yorkshire. You will also walk through some beautiful woodland.

Prices – There is a charge to walk the trail. This costs £6 for an adult, children under 16 are £3 and a family ticket costs £15.

Who Can take part? – I would recommend the trail for children from the age of 5 and over.

Laser Quest – Leeds and Sheffield

A Bit About – There are two Laser Quests in Yorkshire. One in Leeds, West Yorkshire and one in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

Laser Tag is played indoors in a low lit purpose-built multi-level arena. There are places to hide and kids will love the futuristic-looking guns. There is a huge glow-in-the-dark maze which makes it hard to find and follow other players. Players can compete in 20-minute sessions.

Prices – 1 game £5.95 per person, 2 games £9.95 and 3 games £10.95. Prices may be slightly higher in Sheffield.

Who Can take part? – The Leeds venue is for ages 6 and over and the Sheffield venue is for ages 7 and over.

Laserzone – 4 venues – West Yorkshire

A Bit About – There are four Laserzone venues in West Yorkshire – Bradford, Castleford, Huddersfield and Leeds.

They are an indoor laser game venue and they take place in large buildings. You can expect a labyrinth filled with swirling smoke, strange sounds, flashing lights and more. They are multi-level venues and you score points by zapping your opponents and blasting their bases.

Prices – Prices vary per venue. Games cost around £8-16 depending on how many games you want to play.

Who Can take part? – Children can take from the age of 6.

Let Loose! Beverley – East Yorkshire

A Bit About – Let Loose! Adventure Park in Yorkshire is situated on the outskirts of Beverley. There is an outdoor high ropes course with 22 challenges. Indoors there is a roller skating rink plus another ropes course, which is lower than the outdoor course. Also outdoors there is a climbing wall, a zip wire and a play area for the younger visitors.

Prices – Entrance costs £3-5 per person. Activities are priced individually, Roller skating £6 pp, £2 boot hire or you can bring your own. High ropes £20 pp. Climbing wall £10 pp. Zip wire £10 pp for 2 zips.

Who Can Take Part? – Kids can take part from around the age of 5. The high ropes course has a minimum height of 1.4m.

Live For Today – North and West Yorkshire

A Bit About – Live for Today are an outdoor activity centre with locations near Leeds and also at Ripley Castle in Harrogate

The Leeds venue has a number of family-friendly activities. These include archery, axe throwing football darts, bushcraft and more.

Harrogate there is axe throwing, Escape room, body zorbing and paddleboarding. Plus archery, raft building, kayaking, high ropes, canoeing and more.

Prices – Most activities cost around £30 each per person.

Who Can take part – Axe throwing, Air rifle shooting and crossbows from age 12, Archery, cryptic chase, body zorbing, paddleboarding, kayaking and bushcraft from the age of 8. Escape rooms are recommended from the age of 12. Other activities also have a minimum age for participation.

Lock N Load – South Yorkshire

A Bit About – Lock N Load is located in the Parkgate area near Rotherham in South Yorkshire. It is a Laser gaming and Nerf Quest purpose-built arena for kids and adults. It is a large combat space with action-packed games.

Prices – £11 per person.

Who Can take part – No age restrictions are mentioned on their website. Please contact them for information.

Mallyan Spout to Thomason Foss – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – This is quite a challenging walk and it is certainly not for smaller legs. I completed this walk with my then 7-year-old. You can find more info in the post linked above. The walk starts in the pretty village of Goathland. The main walk is 3 miles long, however, we diverted to the wonderful Thomason Foss which was considerably longer and more challenging.

There are rocks to traverse, muddy paths and steep slopes. But you are rewarded with two very different and magnificent waterfalls. If you’re brave enough you can even swim at Thomason Foss.

Prices – FREE. There is a small charge to park in the village of Goathland.

Who Can take part – Recommended for children age 6-7 and over.

Ninja Warrior – Sheffield and Leeds

A Bit About – The are two Ninja Warrior adventure venues in Yorkshire. One is on the outskirts of Leeds and the other is in Sheffield.

There are a number of Ninja type obstacles of varying degrees of difficulty. The challenges involve climbing, balancing and jumping, there is even a series of warped walls. There is also a huge inflatable course.

Prices – A 1-hour sessions costs around £11 per person, spectators are free. Other pricing options are available.

Who Can take part – From the age of 4 for regular sessions.

Roseberry Topping – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – Roseberry Topping is a distinctive hill near Great Ayton and Newton under Roseberry. It is a perfect adventure for families and even younger kids can give it a go.

Don’t forget some study shoes plus drinks and snacks to keep everyone happy. The hill is just over 1,000 feet high. The short but steep walk from the public car park in Newton-Under-Roseberry can be completed by anyone with a basic level of fitness. When you finally reach the top the spectacular views make you feel like you are standing on the roof of the world.

Prices – FREE to visit, there may be a charge to park.

Who Can take part – Suitable for confident walkers from around the age of 5 and over.

Selwicks Bay Flamborough – East Yorkshire

A Bit About – Flamborough has four fantastic beaches. We love them all in different ways as they are each so very different. They do all have a steep walk down (and back up again). Selwicks Bay is our favourite of the four and this is located off the northern edge of Flamborough Head. Click the link above for more info.

The walk down is quite a challenge but it’s doable even for younger visitors. It’s best to visit at low tide as then there are rock pools to explore. Plus you can walk around the intriguing cave-like cuts in the cliffs. You may even spot a puffin or two in the early summer.

Prices – FREE to visit, there is a small charge to park at Flamborough Head.

Who Can take part – I would recommend the walk down for confident walkers, from around the age of 5-6 upwards.

A Bit About – The Underbank Activity Centre is an outdoor adventure centre in Stocksbridge, Sheffield. They offer 1 hour instructed sessions for families. You can choose from kayaking, canoeing, archery, climbing and bushcraft.

Watersports

Allerthorpe Lakeland – East Yorkshire

A Bit About – Allerthorpe Lakeland is a watersports centre in Pocklington. You can hire canoes, pedalos, Canadian catamarans, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. They also have an inflatable aqua park on the main lake. There are two small beach areas on the main lake where you can paddle. Also on-site there are outdoor play areas and you can enjoy a walk around the park. Why not feed the lake’s fish on your way around?

Prices – Entrance costs £3 each or £8 for a group of 5. Activities are priced individually. Pedalos are £12 a boat, single kayak £10, aqua park £20 per person. Other activities are priced separately.

Who Can Take Part – Children must be 8 years old for the Aquapark and it is essential that you can swim 50m in a buoyancy aid. On some of the boats younger children can accompany their adults and there is a minimum age for kids to go out on their own on the lake.

Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre – South Yorkshire

A Bit About – This site is located on the outskirts of Doncaster and they offer a range of water-based activities.

In the warmer months, there is an Aqua Park on the lake. Their floating inflatable park has a range of obstacles including climbing walls, slides, runways and a giant blast bag. Sessions are 60 minutes with 10 minutes of safety briefing. Also on the lake, there is open-water swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. You can hire kayaks, Canadian canoes and family canoes.

Prices – Aquapark £15.50 per person online. Kayaks are £10 per craft, Canadian canoes £15 and Family canoe £20.

Who Can Take Part – Aquapark – All participants must be 7 years old and have a height of 122 cm. Participants must be able to swim 25 metres. Boat and craft hire – single occupancy must be 8 years old, younger children can accompany adults on some of their equipment. Children must be 12 or over to take part in Stand Up Paddleboarding.

Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre – West Yorkshire

A Bit About – The Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre is located in Yeadon near to Leeds Bradford airport, around 8 miles from the city centre.

They offer a number of watersports including sailing, kayaking, open canoeing and stand up paddleboarding. Plus improvised rafting, windsurfing and rowing. On land, they offer abseiling, orienteering, off-road biking and bushcraft. Plus soft archery and problem-solving.

Prices – There are currently no prices on their website.

Who Can Take Part – Most activities are for children from around the age of 7-8 and older. Please contact them for further information.

North Yorkshire Water Park – North Yorkshire

A Bit About – The North Yorkshire Water Park is located in Wykeham, near Scarborough. Around the lake there is an all-terrain gravel path perfect for walking, running or cycling.

On the lake, they offer a range of watersports. In the warmer months, there is an Aqua Park inflatable course with climbing walls, huge slides, trampolines, blast bags and more. Plus kayaking, pedalos shaped like cars, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing. You can also hire mini electric ships and take taster or improver sailing lessons.

Prices – Aqua park – £18 pp. Kayaking – £16 pp per hour. £12 per pedalo for 30 minutes. SUP hire without instruction £16 pp per hour. Sailing taster session £55 pp £80 or two.

Who Can take part – Aqua park – minimum age 6 years and over 1.2m tall, participants must be able to swim over 50m. Kayaking, SUP 5 and over with adult supervision. Pedalos are at your discretion.

Sheffield Cable Water Ski and Aqua Park – South Yorkshire

A Bit About – Located at Rother Valley Country Park outside of Sheffield is this outdoor watersports centre.

As well as being able to visit the country park itself you can also enjoy their on-lake activities. There is a seasonal Aqua Park which is one of the biggest Inflatable Aqua Parks in the UK. There are huge inflatable slides, a trampoline, a climbing wall, a blast bag and more. There is also a Wake Park where you can learn to Wakeboard, kneeboard or water ski.

Prices – Aqua Park £15 per person plus £5 wetsuit hire. Beginner cable session £28 for 2 hours per person. Junior riders session – TBC.

Who Can Take Part – Aqua Park is from the age of 7 and at least 122cm tall. All participants must be able to swim a minimum of 25 metres. During normal hours all participants need to be 12 years and above to use Wake Park. Then run sessions for 8-12-year-olds.

Welton Waters Adventure Centre – East Yorkshire

A Bit About – Located near Brough is the Welton Waters Adventure Centre. It is an outdoor activity centre with water and land-based activities.

They offer multi-activity sessions which include archery, sailing, rafted canoes and stand-up paddleboarding. Plus kayaking, raft building, orienteering and traverse wall. You can also book lessons and courses. They can tailor your activities according to what your family want to try out.

Prices – Sailing and windsurfing lessons £15 adult, £10 child. Most of their other prices are available upon request.

Who Can Take Part – All ages are welcome on their sailing course. Some of the activities may have age restrictions, although they try to be as inclusive as possible.
